DEF Rubber

How is the Rubber Lining construction carried out?

DEF Rubber’s wear-resistant Rubber Sheets find extensive application in material transfer, conveying, screening, dewatering, and other processes, making them an indispensable component in mining equipment. DEF Rubber offers customized mining-grade rubber product solutions tailored to the specific needs of our clients. We have compiled the common procedures and considerations for Rubber Lining construction. If you are interested in high-quality Rubber Linings from DEF Rubber, please feel free to contact us.

Rubber Lining Construction Procedures and Precautions

I. Pre-construction Preparation:
  1. Materials: Steel plates, Rubber Sheets.
  2. Tools: Brushes, pressure rollers, rubber mallets, heat guns, and others.
  3. Environmental Conditions: Maintain a temperature of 25-30°C and humidity between 30-60%.
II. Construction Process:
  1. Surface Preparation of Substrate:
  • Sandblasting and grinding the surface of steel plates to remove rust and oxide layers, achieving a cleanliness level of SO2.5 and a rough, tactile surface. (Tools such as angle grinders, grinding wheels, or pointed grinding wheel heads can be used.)
  • Cleaning the sandblasted surface with a cleaning agent and allowing it to air dry.
  • Thoroughly mixing and evenly applying a metal treatment agent to the substrate’s surface. Ensure the substrate is dry and free from water or oil before application. Wear cotton gloves while applying. Allow it to air dry for at least 45 minutes (longer drying times, achieved through natural ventilation or heat guns, yield better results).
  1. Inspection and Bonding of Rubber Sheets:
  • Rubber Sheet Thickness Check: Confirm the rubber thickness before cutting, and measure areas prone to stretching and thinning during construction using a thickness gauge.
  • Rubber Sheet Hardness Check: Note that the hardness of natural rubber can change with temperature, with lower temperatures resulting in higher hardness.
  • Tensile Strength Testing: Test the bonding strength between the Rubber Sheet and adhesive to ensure it meets requirements.
  • Spark Testing for Rubber Sheets: Detect any damage, cracks, or electrical leaks in the Rubber Sheets, including at the seams.
  • Surface Treatment of Rubber: Create a rough surface on the Rubber Sheets, clean them thoroughly, and then cut them. Use a rubber treatment agent to scrub the rubber surface vigorously.
  • First Gluing Pass: Mix the curing agent into the adhesive in the correct proportion. Begin the first pass of gluing separately on the substrate and rubber surface using a brush. Allow it to dry for 30-40 minutes, ensuring a non-sticky touch.
  • Second Gluing Pass and Bonding: Apply the prepared adhesive evenly to both the substrate and rubber surface (can be done simultaneously). After gluing, wait for 30-40 minutes until a tacky feeling develops on the surface. Align the rubber edges and lay them flat on the substrate from top to bottom. Use a pressure roller to roll from the middle to the sides, pressing firmly to remove air bubbles. The rolling pressure should not be excessive. After the entire Rubber Lining is rolled, tap it twice with a rubber mallet to complete the bonding. (Note: The Rubber Sheet should be larger than the steel plate dimensions).
III. Additional Considerations:
  1. Drying Time: The bonding time between the Rubber Sheet and substrate is between 30 to 50 minutes after the second gluing pass.
  2. Factors Affecting Bonding Strength:
  • Weather: Choose dry and sunny weather.
  • Substrate Surface Preparation: Ensure the substrate is smooth, free from depressions, and without dead spots. Sandblast the substrate for rust removal, and thoroughly clean and roughen the Rubber Sheet to prevent oxidation at the bonding areas.
  • Drying Time: Each bonding and drying session should typically be at least 40 minutes.
